Photos for a Project in Progress by Jimmy Limit
January 6 @ 11:00 am - March 9 @ 11:00 pm
St. Catherine-based artist Jimmy Limit uses photography to explore the tension between image and object. Adopting the language of commercial photography and advertising he creates highly graphic compositions that are both familiar and strangely illegible, causing the viewer to question the motives of the imagery when placed in the public realm.
Photos for a Project in Progress builds on Limit’s existing practice with a new body of work inspired by the Bentway at this key moment during the site’s transformation. Sourcing artifacts left behind by the construction process such as (name materials), Limit creates a series of unlikely and highly graphic assemblages, embedding familiar tools and discarded objects with new significance, beauty and humor. Objects here are chosen for their formal quality rather than their traditional function calling into question the divide between use-value and aesthetics. Together, these contemporary still-lifes serve as a portrait of a place in transition – a time capsule that reflects on the present while nodding to the Bentway’s future.
