Summer Playlist Pop-Up Concert
On July 22, turn up your summer playlist. Listen to tunes by girl-power pop collective For Esmé, experimental rock/jazz band Luge, and Toronto-born, Jamaican-Trinidadian emcee, Sydanie.
3–4pm – For Esmé
4–5pm – Luge
5–6pm – Sydanie
Fronted by Mar Meredith, For Esmé is an unabashedly feminist exploration of self-love and the courage of conviction in uncertain times. Refracting light through dark places, their 2018 album Righteous Woman invokes the urgent and personal to reflect on and reposition the multitudes of womanhood, to push back against the patriarchy, to offer the possibility of living on one’s own terms.
Formed in 2015 out of a Toronto high school, Luge is now entering its third year of experimental noise-rockery. Currently, it consists of Cam Fraser on bass, Kaiva Gotham on vocals and keys, Tobias Hart on guitar, and Stu Mein on drums. Together they create a sound that is both noisy and dance-able, while retaining elements of punk and jazz. Luge has independently released two EPs: Sex Cop (2015) and Actual Rock ‘n’ Roll (2017) available on CD, cassette tape, and digitally. Above all, Luge is dedicated to enjoying the infinite possibilities of music and performance.
Often referred to as a supernatural rapper mom, Sydanie is a magnetic emcee with unheralded energy. A Toronto-born, Jamaican-Trinidadian artist, Sydanie is levelling all expectations and setting the bar at new heights for women in the T.O. hip-hop scene. Her impeccable production treatments run the spectrum from house to ambient dark wave. Nuanced beats lay the foundations for Sydanie to unpack her lyrical fireworks; ranging from meditative to incendiary, Sydanie’s verses transmit a contagious momentum that results in seriously deep thrills for the listener.
