SUMMARY:Nadine Stijns\, A Nation Outside a Nation with Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Nadine Stijns\, A Nation Outside a Nation (2012–14)\nThe Bentway and Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Exhibition \nDutch artist Nadine Stijns attempts to capture the memories\, dreams\, and flow of capital and possessions throughout the Filipino diaspora. In addition to traditional portraits\, landscapes\, and still lifes\, many of which include meticulous documentation of “balikbayan box” supplies (tax-free goods sent by Filipino migrants back to family in the Philippines)\, Stijns photographs a variety of visual sources and then layers the images to create a tangible depiction of migrant life. This work performs as documentation of labor migration\, but it is also itself a document\, an object that unites the individual migrant with their homeland. \n\nAbout:\nCONTACT fosters and celebrates the art and profession of photography with its annual Festival in May and year-round programming in the CONTACT Gallery in Toronto. CONTACT presents lens-based works by acclaimed and emerging artists\, documentary photographers\, and photojournalists from Canada and around the world. The curated program of Primary Exhibitions (collaborations with major museums\, galleries\, and artist-run centers)\, and Public Installations (site-specific public art projects)\, are the core of the Festival. These are cultivated through partnerships\, commissions\, and new discoveries\, framing the cultural\, social\, and political events of our times. The featured and open exhibitions present a range of works by local and international artists at leading galleries and alternative spaces across the city. CONTACT also includes a wide range of events including a book fair\, lectures\, talks\, panels\, workshops\, and symposia during the Festival and hosts exhibitions and programs at its Gallery throughout the year. \nCONTACT\, a not-for-profit organization founded in 1997\, is generously supported by Scotiabank\, Scotia Wealth Management\, Nikon Canada\, Pattison Outdoor Advertising\, Toronto Image Works\, Transcontinental PLM\, 3M Canada\, BIG Digital\, Waddington’s Auctioneers and Appraisers\, Four By Eight Signs\, Beyond Digital Imaging\, Steam Whistle Brewing\, Art Toronto\, The Gladstone Hotel\, The Globe and Mail\, NOW Magazine\, CBC Toronto\, and Canadian Art. \nCONTACT gratefully acknowledges the support of Celebrate Ontario\, Ontario Cultural Attractions Fund\, Ontario Ministry of Tourism\, Culture and Sport\, Ontario Arts Council\, The Government of Ontario\, Partners in Art\, Canada Council for the Arts\, La Fondation Emmanuelle Gattuso\, the Howard Webster Foundation\, Hal Jackman Foundation\, Mondrian Fund\, Istituto Italiano di Cultura\, Goethe-Institut\, Tourism Toronto and all of their funders\, donors\, and programming partners. \n \n

SUMMARY:New Monuments for New Cities with the High Line Network
DESCRIPTION:New Monuments for New Cities is the inaugural project of the High Line Network Joint Art Initiative\, a new collaboration between infrastructure reuse projects in North America. This public art exhibition will travel across the United States and Canada throughout 2019. \nFor the exhibition\, five urban reuse projects that are part of the High Line Network invited five of their local artists or artist groups to create proposals (in the form of posters) for new monuments for a 21st century city. Each participating location will produce an exhibition of the resulting 25 artworks that is specific to their site. The Toronto exhibition at The Bentway runs May 11-August 30. \nThe launch of the New Monuments for New Cities exhibit will be marked with a Monuments Summit on May 11. The Summit is a day-long public event that will introduce the public to the New Monuments exhibition\, the contributing artists from several participating cities\, and the issues the exhibition raises. The day will be structured around a series of conversations and participatory activities\, asking the public to reflect on the same set of questions raised by the artists and to engage in a collective dialogue about issues of representation\, civic histories and monumentality. \nThe Bentway’s art exhibition will be accompanied by public tours led by some of the artists involved\, as well as other artists and thinkers in Toronto. Tours occur on Tuesdays (6-7pm)\, May 14-August 20. As cities become denser and land for traditional parks becomes scarce\, citizens are finding creative ways to bring greenspace to their neighborhoods. Projects in the High Line Network transform underutilized infrastructure into new urban landscapes. Redefining what a park can be\, these hybrid spaces are also public squares\, open-air museums\, botanical gardens\, social service organizations\, walkways\, transit corridors\, and more. \nThe High Line Network is made possible by the founding support of The JPB Foundation. Additional funding is provided by Amanda and Don Mullen. \nSusan Blight is an interdisciplinary artist and filmmaker from Couchiching First Nation\, Anishinaabe\, Turtle Clan whose work has been screened and exhibited nationally and internationally. Susan is co-founder of The Ogimaa Miikana Project\, an artist/activist collective working to reclaim and rename the roads\, streets\, and landmarks of Toronto with Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe language). \nCoco Guzman is a Toronto-based visual artist whose work addresses themes of gender and sexuality\, war and protest\, the invisibility of migrants and refugees\, and the dynamics of exclusion and normalization. Guzman has exhibited worldwide\, including at Colombia University\, Chicago; The Art Gallery of Ontario\, Toronto; Montreal Arts Interculturels\, Montreal; and El Porvenir de la Revuelta\, Madrid. http://www.cocoriot.com/ \nLife of a Craphead is the collaboration of Amy Lam and Jon McCurley whose work spans performance art\, film\, and curation. Since 1999\, he has been engaged in sculpture and installation work which explores issues of function\, occupation and cultural coding in the domestic and urban realms. Liu’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. \nQuentin VerCetty is an award winning visual storyteller and art educator whose work uses speculative narratives including Afrofuturism to address issues of representation\, immigration\, decolonization\, and the lack of what he terms PDAA: Public Display(s) of Appreciation for Africa(ns). https://www.vercetty.com/ \nImage: Quentin-VerCetty\, Library of Unlearning \n \n

SUMMARY:Dérives by Noémie Lafrance - June 07\, 6pm
DESCRIPTION:A site specific performance by Noémie Lafrance\nJune 7\n6pm & 8pm \nJune 8\n6pm & 8pm \nThis new work by Noémie Lafrance created specifically for The Bentway site explores how our navigation of architecture and urban infrastructures is “choreographed” and investigates the political\, social and cultural influences those choreographies impart on the human body and the social body. It is a site-specific work of “instructional choreography” created from a number of scripted instructions to be enacted by a group of 60 performers and the public across the full length of The Bentway site. \nLeading up to the creation of this epic work\, a series of 6 workshops will be held welcoming people from all segments of the community and all ages. Participants will engage with\, and debate the ideas behind the work\, questioning how urban infrastructure operates as a new form of social design and political power. The workshops will explore how structures (physical and relational) affect our social relations\, define new ways of navigating\, moving and thinking\, and impact our lives\, in general\, as urban dwellers. The workshops will engage a wide range of participants (professional dancers and actors\, members of the community at large\, and future audience members) in round table discussions\, collective writing exercises and group physical improvisations in movement and voice. Participants of all experience levels are welcome. \n\nNoémie Lafrance is known for her innovative approach to public space interventions and her dance films. Her company Sens Production has produced numerous site-specific works in public spaces in New York City and internationally. Lafrance’s work includes Agora\, which occupied the 50\,000 sq feet then abandoned McCarren Park Pool in Williamsburg\, Brooklyn\, Rapture staging the architecture of Frank Gehry. Her work has toured internationally and was presented as part of the New York City Whitney Biennal\, The Festival de Cannes\, the Festival TransAmerique\, among others. She has choreographed and directed music videos and concerts for artists such as David Byrne\, Feist\, Justin Timberlake\, Carly Rae Jepsen\, Snow Patrol\, Amanda Palmer and many others. \nThe Bentway’s summer season is supported by the City of Toronto\, Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport\, Ira Gluskin & Maxine Granovsky Gluskin\, Richard M. Ivey and the Ivey Commissioning Fund\, Donald K. Johnson\, O.C. & Anna McCowan-Johnson\, Langford Family Foundation at Toronto Foundation\, Northwood Family Office\, and Diamond Corp. Dérives is also supported by the Hal Jackman Foundation and Fort York National Historic Site. \n

SUMMARY:Tai Chi with Eti Greenberg - June 13
DESCRIPTION:A twice weekly recreational Tai Chi class\nTai Chi at The Bentway occurs every Monday (5:30pm) and Thursday (11:00am) from June 13-August 29 \nNot only is Tai Chi fun and relaxing (and easy to get into) but it can be effective therapy for a wide range of health problems (back pain\, arthritis\, poor circulation etc.). It can improve balance and energy level. Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese exercise for health. It consists of slow and graceful movements that relax and strengthen both body and mind. It is an art form based on the philosophy of returning to a natural state of health and well being. \nEti’s practice has an extra degree of stretching and turning in each movement\, placing the emphasis on health improvement. With diligent practice\, this type of movement produces a profound effect on all systems of the body by reducing tension\, improving circulation\, and increasing strength and flexibility. \nEach class lasts about 1 hour starting with fifteen to twenty minutes of warm up exercise including meridian stretches.\n*Please wear comfortable loose-fitting clothes and soft shoes. Bring a yoga mat for stretches on the ground. \n\nAbout Eti Greenberg\nEti was born and grew up in Haifa\, Israel. After time in Manhattan\, Gaillard\, Switzerland\, and Jerusalem\, she moved to Toronto with her family. She has had a varied professional career\, including photographic retouching\, cinema management\, Shiatsu and Acupuncture therapy\, and 3 years working in the office of City Councillor Adam Vaughan where she developed several special projects. Eti now focuses on her Tai Chi practice and is currently an instructor at several places around the City including the JCC and Harbourfront Centre. \nIn her spare time she enjoys exploring the city with husband and watching as neighbourhoods change over the years. They love to walk\, ride their tandem bike\, and kayak to discover new things in the city and the harbor. \n

SUMMARY:Tai Chi with Eti Greenberg - July 01
