August 9, 2020 | Communal Picnic with The Depanneur
August 9 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
Communal Picnic happens every Sunday, August 9-September 13
Following the success of our 2019 Communal Table dinner series partnership and now that Toronto has moved into Stage 3 reopening, The Depanneur & The Bentway have teamed up again to envision a new kind of shared culinary experience amidst the challenges posed by physical distancing.
Although we cannot come together as we did before, Communal Picnic offers a public, collective experience in the spirit of Communal Table, while ensuring a safe and responsible environment for our community.
Beginning August 9, The Bentway will offer weekly three-course picnic meal packages for neighbours and community members to pick up and enjoy on-site or at home featuring chefs and food offerings as curated by Toronto restaurant and innovative “culinary talent showcase” The Depanneur.
Communal Picnic will explore Toronto’s diverse culinary traditions by featuring a different cuisine each week and be available for parties of two (2), four (4) or six (6). Communal Picnic meals must be pre-ordered and will be available for contactless pick-up at The Bentway (250 Fort York Blvd) on Sunday, August 9 from 6:00pm-7:00pm – rain or shine.
Limited on-site seating will be sanitized and available on a first-come, first-serve basis from 6:00pm -7:30pm. Masks are required at pick-up and to access on-site washrooms, and we ask that all guests please practice physical distancing while waiting to pick up your meal.
In order to minimize waste, please bring your own plates, cutlery, picnic blanket(s) and beverage(s). Please note: Alcohol consumption is not permitted on-site.
Dinner for two: $ 59 + HST | Dinner for four: $ 109 + HST | Dinner for six: $ 159 + HST
Everyone is welcome.
As organizations that champion accessibility, The Bentway and The Depanneur have teamed up to introduce a pay-it-forward option for this year’s Communal Picnic series.
When pre-ordering picnic meals online, guests can now purchase a single meal ($30), or make a donation (in $10 increments) which will be used to provide meals to residents of our local respite centers. For every pay-it-forward meal purchased, The Depanneur and The Bentway will work together to provide a second meal to double the impact of your generosity.
SPAIN FEATURING JOSE ARATO
Paella is often thought of as the Spanish national dish, but it is really a speciality of Valencia, though it has countless regional variations. Named after the pan it is cooked in, this classic rice dish has five key ingredients: Spanish short-grain rice, saffron, pimentón (smoked paprika), olive oil and a paella pan. Beyond that, there are innumerable local versions incorporating everything from seafood to snails to rabbit. José Arato, owner and Head Chef of Pimentón, has built an enthusiastic following around his take on this classic dish at Evergreen Brickworks Farmers’ Market.
A Catalonian grilled vegetable salad named from the Catalan word escalivar, meaning “to roast over ashes or embers,” as it is traditional to cook the vegetables over open flame. A selection of Mediterranean vegetables — most commonly red peppers, eggplants and onions — typically grilled in their skins and dressed with lots of garlic, parsley, lemon & olive oil.
- Pork & Chicken Paella
One of José’s signature dishes, this delicious paella features fresh chicken and tender cubes of pork shoulder, with onion, garlic, tomatoes & peppers cooked with short-grain rice in a saffron-scented chicken stock.
Lima & green beans along with onion, garlic, tomatoes & peppers cooked with short-grain rice in a saffron-scented vegetable stock
- Tarta de Santiago
A specialty of Galicia; rich, fragrant almond cake with hint of lemon zest and dusting of powdered sugar.
