Pro Tem by Janine Miedzik
January 6, 2018 @ 11:00 am - March 9, 2018 @ 11:00 pm
Toronto-based sculpture and installation artist Janine Miedzik uses brightly coloured adhesive tape as her primary medium, activating utilitarian surfaces with graphic patterns and bold tones. Borrowing from — and grafting onto — the types of temporary, modular structures found along highways, in parking lots, and on construction sites, Janine Miedzik adopts the language of transitory spaces and their unique methods of way-finding. Her work provides an observation on, and temporary response to, the built environment.
Pro Tem is a series of provisional signage works that mimic construction notices, offering a familiar yet unexpected visual experience within the reimagined space of the Bentway. Vivid colours and graphic symbols create amplified versions of objects that are often found amidst everyday travels through the urban environment. Abstract patterns on tarp-wrapped signs bear the symbols of their surroundings; they suggest a relationship to the signals that alert us to caution, to danger, or to changes in our typical routes.
