Re-Route by Jennifer Ilett
January 6, 2018 @ 11:00 am - March 9, 2018 @ 11:00 pm
Toronto-based multi-disciplinary artist and designer Jennifer Ilett explores multiple avenues of creative communication, including design, illustration, installation art, and mural works. Her murals often respond to local landmarks and their histories through figurative, typographical, and object-based representations with an approachable, graphic aesthetic.
Jennifer Ilett’s Re-Route responds to the Gardiner Expressway as an iconic Toronto artery whose layered history encompasses settlement and expansion: cutting across historic railways that helped build Canada, narrowly curving around Toronto’s first settlement, and planting its feet where waterways like Garrison Creek once emptied into Lake Ontario – long filled in to make way for an expanding city. Re-Route unearths those passages of the past and present, pulling them apart like tangled thread. Inspired by exploded-view drawings in technical illustration, the work lays bare the archaeology of the Bentway’s site. It de-prioritizes the linear narrative of progress and re-imagines the space not as a journey, but as a destination.
