The Essentials: Art and Urban Recovery
October 21 @ 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm
The year 2020 has forever altered the foundations of public life leading to dramatic shifts in society’s understanding and appreciation of routine, mobility, sustenance, education and cultural production. During this time marked by great upheaval and prolonged uncertainty The Bentway presents The Essentials, a digital public art exhibition that invites artists to reflect on our essential learnings, reaffirming priorities and commitments for the post COVID city.
Join us for a panel discussion moderated by Ilana Altman, Co-Executive Director of The Bentway, highlighting the work of participating artists in The Essentials program. The artists and organizers involved will reflect on their creation process, the challenges of producing work in the public realm during the pandemic and art’s own essential role in our urban recovery.
Panelists include: Erika DeFreitas (Artist, a composition for an elegy to what once was and all that remains; or, a score for the past, the present, the future tenses); Alvin Luong (Artist, Life Preserver) and Joe Sellors (Project Lead, ShowLoveTO + ArtworxTO, City of Toronto)
This panel will be moderated by Ilana Altman (Co-Executive Director, The Bentway)
The Essentials is presented in partnership with the Waterfront BIA and the City of Toronto, as part of the City of Toronto’s BigArtTO campaign, with the generous participation of Canada Post.
